Holiday Cheer !

I love all the parties, gatherings, and socials the holiday season brings. Last weekend, we went to a party at the home of a good friend and had great food, laughs, and plenty libations. We watched the fight and had a really good time mixing and mingling.  I love the decorations, the festive mood and just the overall Spirit of the season. I try not to get caught up in the pressure of gifts and all of the commercialism and just focus on trying to have a good time where ever I go and enjoying the blessing of a good life, health, friends, love and peace in my life. Here are some pics from the party.......

Planning for the Big Day !

Hey blog friends ! I have been MIA for a minute.  It has been a hectic few weeks since we got back from New Orleans making our wedding plans. First of all, we BARELY missed Hurricane Isaac, meaning if we had planned our trip for the following weekend it would have been a complete nightmare ! Secondly, once we got back to Houston my Fiance's Uncle's condition worsened and sadly, he has passed away. We will be traveling to the East Coast this week for the funeral so keep us in your prayers for traveling grace and for me to find ways to comfort him because they were very close and he is having a very hard time with this.

We spent a whirlwind 4 days of planning in the Big Easy & got quite a bit accomplished I must say. First and foremost the contracts are signed and the deposits have been made, so the official wedding date is set for Saturday October 19, 2013 !!!! I am so excited about having a Fall wedding in New Orleans far away from the heat and humidity and at the very end of Hurricane Season LOL. October is the month with the lowest rainfall, best temperatures and lowest humidity.

We have blocked a few hotels in the area for our guests at different price points. So we went to each hotel and met with the Managers so we could personally look at the rooms. We want to make sure that our family and friends really enjoy their stay. We actually stayed the Dauphine Orleans which is the hotel that is closest to our Reception Venue in the French Quarter. We had a great time, the service was great and the Manager actually sent up a bottle of Champagne on our first night !

Enjoying his coffee in the courtyard
Let's toast to love & happiness !

We had two food tastings with catering companies Pigeon Catering and New Orleans Catering and two cake tastings with Royal Cakery and Flour Power. They all went very well. So now we just have to make a final decision. We are both in favor of the same catering company( Yaaay for agreement ! LOL) and Mr. Mixologist is going to let me make the final call on the cake since the price difference is not significant at all & they both tasted extremely good.

We absolutely love the city of  New Orleans and have met some really great vendors, that have been very professional and provided lots of helpful ideas. Even though we are planning this from far away, they are all very responsive to emails and calls which makes this a lot less stressful than it could be.

We made a final decision on our Ceremony Venue, and I couldn't be happier. The one place that we were waiting for construction to be finished on, is just not going to work out. It was a beautiful venue, it's just not going to be big enough. However,  the place that we did book is going to work just fine. Our ceremony is going to be outdoors in a French Courtyard at a private home located in the French Quarter. The lady that I have been working with is the sweetest person, I have spoken to her since the Hurricane and everything is fine at the house. There were a few branches and some ivy that got damaged by the storm but by the time our date rolls around next year we should be good to go. It's called the Montegut House.

The red doors are the entrance to the Ceremony location.

Our Reception is going to also be in the French Quarter at the Musee`Conti  Historical Wax Museum of New Orleans.  They have a beautiful space above the museum and our guests will be able to tour the museum throughout the cocktail hour of the reception if they wish. The lady that runs this place has also been a dream, giving me great advice on other vendors and lots of helpful suggestions. I guess it's official and I do have "Wedding Fever" LOL.  We both actually are getting excited. By far, the vendor that I am most excited about booking is my photographer Studio Tran. Now Mr. Mixologist initially gave me a little push back on this vendor because they are pricey,  but I convinced him that your photographs are the only thing left after the wedding day is long over. He knows that I love pictures and this was very important to me, so he gave in & has since reminded me each.and.every.time.we have had to compromise on something since then LOL. Believe that, and I have compromised in other areas.  But that's OK, it will be worth it. They have lots of albums on their website, that are very impressive to me.

On Saturday Mr. Mixologist spent several hours at the Cigar shop, while I had a Bridal hair and make up consultation with two ladies. I was pleased with both of them and got some direction on what I need to do to get my hair where I want it to be by the wedding date and although I did like the make up consultation, it is clear to me that I most definitely need to get some pounds off in the next year so that I won't have this double chin in all of  my pictures, LOL !

Makeup Trial...just me naturally !

Hair Affair !

Of course while in town, after tending to the business at hand, we made time to have some fun as well.We hit our favorite spots on Frenchman Street and tried out a couple of  new restaurants along with our old standby's.  If you follow me on Yelp, you can check out some of my reviews. By far our greatest new discovery on this trip was a restaurant called Jacques-Imo's Cafe, you can read my review for more details,  but just know that the food and service were phenomenal. My cell battery died so I did not get any photos for the blog or to tweet or instagram, but my memory serves me very well. If you are ever in New Orleans make plans to check this place out.

I am glad to have so many big items off my checklist, so that I can spend the time I need this next year working out, changing my eating habits so I can lose some weight and working on a few DIY projects that I have in front of me. My sister and a couple of my talented Bridesmaids are going to help me out too. I am looking forward to the process. They say once you set a date, the time flies by, so we shall see.

A found this on Pinterest a few weeks ago.

Well said. I have promised my family & friends that I will not become a Bridezilla and I mean it LOL. So far things are coming to together just fine.

Birthday Weekend Part 2 * Photo Heavy Post *

Friday night was spent having great drinks and conversation with friends. We decided to pick one of our tried and true favorite places and also a new spot to hang out. First up Mr. Mixologist picked out the new place called Absinthe Brasserie in Midtown. This was a nice, cozy lounge tucked out of the way. They had nice cocktails and a pretty creative drink menu and some good  small plates. We definitely will be back. Be advised this place has absolutely no signage outside. It seems they want to be "off the radar" which is kind of cool. Look for the big brown double doors under the black awning.

We polished off these plates !
The actual "Absinthe" drink is pretty potent according to the menfolk who attended. I personally was trying to pace myself for the evening so I did not partake in it but they did. Supposedly it has some hallucinogenic qualities LOL. I was trying to maintain my composure.

Great friends

Of course they found a place to smoke Cigars ! LOL

Next up, we headed over to one of our tried and true spots. Boheme Cafe & Wine Bar, also in Midtown. We love this place ! They have recently expanded what was already a really nice patio. There is plenty of seating & even though it gets crowded we were able to get seats together for the 15 or so people we had with us.

I appreciate my blog/twitter peeps who have become my good friends IRL for coming out to help me celebrate my Birthday! Thank you so much ladies :)

Cutest couple !

Feeling really good ! LOL

Patio Parlayin !
I was having a great time at Boheme until the Houston humidity ruined my do' LOL ! I sobered up real quick after looking more closely at the pictures on my camera.  I won't post the pictures of me looking crazy about the head LMAO.  Needless to say, I had to get up & call my stylist with an SOS so that I could be cute for the Birthday dinner that Mr. Mixologist had planned for us on Saturday.

It was a great evening " Birthday Bar Hopping " with my friends, with nice drinks, great ambiance and good weather (it had been pouring down raining the whole week).  Somebody was smiling on me !

Weekend Wrap Up

We had a pretty nice weekend.

Friday night I helped my girlfriend host her 10 yr old daughters Birthday Slumber party. There were a total of 12 girls from the age of 9-15. Whew ! We let them make their own pizzas, we played the Wii game Just Dance which just proved to me  how totally out of shape I am much I need some cardio in my life.  LOL She also had a young lady come to the house so that all the girls could get manicures. We did Karaoke, baked cookies and watched movies. It was a loooong night. But it was a really fun girls night.

Saturday she had the actual party where the rest of the family came by for Hot Dogs and Cupcakes. It was extremely hot so the girls played in the water outside before the party started.

Saturday night we hung out with TiffanyNHouston and her husband. Good times & plenty of laughing. Both of the guys were telling us some crazy stories from their younger days that are just not safe for the blog LMAO. We went to V21 Shot Bar & Grille.  We enjoyed some great food and drinks. We had some very nice Mojitos and I had another drink called the Electric Slide.  They have several shot variations which were pretty creative. We enjoyed a pretty good appetizer called Greek Nachos and the Calamari was pretty good too. We also had a Margherita Pizza and Cajun Shrimp Sliders. I wish I had taken some photos cause the food was really good. We didn't stay out too late because they had to get up early to go fishing and we wanted to make it to early service.

Sunday was such a beautiful First Sunday. After church, we went to grab some chinese for lunch and then our favorite past time, looking at neighborhoods.  We ran some errands, got some ice cream and then I needed a nap (still recuperating from being up all night with those girls).  We ended the weekend watching the NBA playoffs.

How was your weekend ?   What did you do ?

Day 28 Why You Stressing ?

What stresses you out ?
I don't like conflict. I don't like disagreements.Or better yet, I don't like it when folks have to let it be known that there is some sort of conflict. I like for people to get along. I am the peacemaker. I try to squash beef. I try to take the high road if I can. Don't get it twisted, I will state my opinion if need be. In fact I am pretty opinionated. I just respect other's rights to have an opinion as well & don't have a real issue when we don't agree. I respect other's rights to be themselves. I just don't think that every situation requires energy, especially negative energy. This type of ish totally stresses me out.

I remember having a party at my house where a group my friends who don't like one of my other good friends (personality conflict in my opinion). I was actually brought to tears by the situation that arose because of a comment that was made by my friend that the several friends didn't like (they already don't care for her). I hate the fact that I have to plan events worried that there will be an issue. At my next event, I had to make a choice of who to leave off the guest list. I hated that. I don't get it. After some time had passed though, I tried again. At my last event (our engagement party) all parties were present with no issue. It was cool, not even cordial ( they totally ignored her) which was fine by me. I can just do without the comments and the snark. LOL

Mothers are Magnificent !

We had a lovely Mother's Day celebration with the family. My generation hosted the event & we prepared all of the food, organized the activities, etc. We had plenty of food. Ribs, Chicken, Sausage, Dirty Rice, Baked Beans, Mac & Cheese, Potato Salad, Garden Salad, Banana Pudding and Strawberry Cake.

What a spread !

The infamous Kiddie Table

When me and my cousins get together it's like a doggone daycare, LOL. We set up a craft table in the garage for the kids to keep them entertained. They made jewelry  and other trinkets as gifts for all of the mothers.

I will wear it always :)

Getting my bracelet put on my wrist that my youngest niece made for me at the craft table.

My oldest niece Savannah helped me out in the back bedroom putting together some fresh flower arrangements for all of the mothers, aunts, and grandmothers. We made 15 of them. She was sooo excited to help me with this & she really did a phenomenal job assisting me. They came out lovely.

Tying on the Ribbon

Finished Product

We did a surprise presentation of the flowers to all of the mothers, aunts and grandmothers to the song by Boyz 2 Men, "Mama". We had all of the littlest kids present the flowers to each person.  I know it sounds really cheesy, but they loved it ! And so did the kids :)

The Matriarch in the house

My cousin telling the truth  ! LOL

After presenting them with their flowers and the gifts we bought for them and the gifts the kids made for them, we then had an impromptu session where myself and various cousins stood up before the group to sing our mother's praises and talked about the sacrifices they have made for us and how much we appreciate them for it. By the time we were finished, there was not a dry eye in the house !

I have a friend & fellow blogger TIH who just lost her MIL right before Mother's Day, when I spoke with her in the days before the funeral, she wished us traveling grace and told me to hug my mother extra tight and that is exactly what I did !

You know how they always say at funerals, you should give the flowers to people while they are living ? Well we just want to always take the opportunity to honor our mothers in their presence for as long as we are blessed to have them.

All in all it was a wonderful Mother's Day with the family.

How did you celebrate Mother's Day ?
