March Madness

Hey Blog Family,

Just peeping in my little space here to check in.  I hope to be back soon for a proper post. It has been March Madness around here & I have been pretty busy lately. I got a new gig (same company, different Manager, different location which now involves a commute) and have been settling in to that. Also, our nieces and nephews came for their annual Spring Break Trip & we did it big.  That will probably be my next blog post, whenever I can comb through the pics & find the time to do a full recap. Until then......

Our Annual Spring Break Photo Series continues..................

How is your Spring coming along ?

Middle of America

Am I lame for wanting a copy of the TimeLife  Singers & Songwriters CD collection ? LOL  I remember when I was young & those music commercials would come on TV and all my aunts & uncles & older cousins would be jammin'.  Now I get it. Music can really take me back &  make me feel really warm & fuzzy inside, especially when its the music you grew up on.

Me & my sister spent our summers literally in the " middle of America " in a little small town that my mother had to drive 7 hours to get to so she could drop us off to stay with my great-grandmother & great aunt. It's the place where she grew up and I have so many funny stories from that time that I just may blog about since I'm doing this 30 day blog challenge.

Anyway the purpose of this post was to highlight the band "America" which I discovered during these lazy summers in the 70's & early 80's. Since they had no "urban" radio station, we had to listen to what we could get on our little transistor radios (remember those?)& their tiny antennas. We spent so may lazy summer days having picnics (sandwiches and a bunch of junk food, chips, candy & soda) laying on our blankets under the trees reading, talking, laughing & listening to the radio.  I think there was a lot of really great music from that time.

We used to sing this one at the top of our lungs......

I had no idea what was going on with all the symbolism in this song, but sang it loud and strong just the same. LOL

I bet it was fun to be in a band in the 70's.....like I said all the imagery was beyond me as a child but it is definitely interesting to listen to it now and put some of the themes together in the music.

What is some of your favorite music from your youth ?   Do you like America ?

Happy Birthday to me......

Today is my birthday. I am 43. So very  thankful for another year of life, love, health, happiness and blessings !

I am going to do my best to enjoy myself this weekend. This life is precious.

This is one of my favorite pictures of myself from my childhood. It was my very first school picture. I was in Kindergarten. I still remember picking out this outfit with my mom at JC Penney & getting ready for picture day LOL. I thought I was doing it !  I still love green. It's my favorite color.  Check out my turtle neck with my fly collar and my snaggle teeth :)

There are so many things, I wish the me today could have told this little girl about life, but that is another blog post in itself !

Enjoy your weekend !

Throwback Thursday .....

My sister and BIL just celebrated 17 years of marriage two weeks ago. I am so happy for them.  To celebrate their 10 th Wedding Anniversary we all went to Jamaica and they renewed their vows on the beach ! It was so beautiful. It is hard to believe that trip was 7 years ago in 2005. WOW. Time marches on.

For this weeks " Throwback Thursday " I thought I would share some pics from the trip....

It was a beautiful day for a wedding on the beach  !

We stayed at an all inclusive resort that was kid friendly, with lots of families and it turned out to be a lot of fun.

Little sis giving her big sis some sugah  :)

Me, BIL & Little Sister

This was way before my 5 yr old nephew was born. He was just a twinkle in his daddy's eye as they say. The girls enjoyed themselves tremendously. They loved the long plane ride, the resort pools & activities geared towards the kids. They were in heaven ! They stayed in a room with me, so their parents could "Honeymoon" for the week that we were there.

Me and my girls hanging out in the room !

We played spades, and other games, had lots of parties on the beach sponsored by the Resort and of course the unlimited food and drinks were nice.

Playing spades

Me & my oldest niece lounging.

We went snorkeling and  para-sailing, I also tried to get up on a surfboard .....FAIL! LOL

I love the sound of the waves !

I ended up spending countless hours in the hammocks that were all around, especially in the late afternoons and  evenings. I promise you I fell asleep a few times. The sound of the waves crashing is like a lullaby to me.

Relaxing at its best !

I was a great family trip. I am so happy for my sister and BIL. The love and commitment they share, the family they have built and maintained and the dreams they have fulfilled just makes me extremely proud. They are truly a blessing to me.

Have you ever been to a destination wedding ?  A Vowel Renewal ? How about Jamaica ? What is your idea of a great vacation ?

Spring has Sprung ! Part 1

Last week I hosted all of my nieces & nephews for Spring Break. The annual tradition continues. This year for some reason they did not have the same break as the Texas kids, so Mr. Mixologist had to really step up to help me out because all my girlfriend's kids were in school so we were on our own for the week.

He is such a big kid  !

They are totally in love with their new "uncle-to-be" and he is quite ate up with them as well. This makes me so happy to see.

My mom made sure the kids had plenty of snacks & drinks for the road trip. After several movies, singing contests, bathroom breaks and of course the mandatory McDonald's stop, we finally made it to Texas.

Ready to ride !

The kids are ages 5 through 11. Three are my sister's children and the other  three are my first cousin's kids who also come every year.

Monday we slept in, had a big Brunch and then went shopping for our outfits for the professional pictures we take every year. We ended up at Boudreaux's their favorite  Cajun restaurant for dinner. I think coming from a landlocked state, they just can't get enough of all the Gulf Coast seafood we have here.

See how clean those plates are ! LOL

Mr. Mixologist has got them all hooked on his creamy grits for breakfast. Even my mother has to have them whenever we come for a visit. It must be all those summers he spent in Charleston, because he makes them perfect every time.

I decided for this years picture, I wanted the girls to get their hair done at the Salon right along with me. This kept me from having to wrangle with four heads, plus mine AND get kids dressed for pictures.

Sleepy heads

Tuesday we had to get up very early to get to the Salon so that we could be sure to be on time for our photo appointment early afternoon. The girls were sleepy but once they woke up they were excited about getting their hair washed and styled. We brought our clothes to change for the pictures after we were finished.

My stylist is a sweetheart. When she told me what I owed her, I did a double take because I know it should have been way more, but I guess she appreciated the business & gave me a very nice discount.

Picture ready !

If you are ever in Houston and in need of a stylist give her a call. Check out her FB page right here.  The photos really came out great. This was Mr. Mixologist's third Spring Break with the kids & since it's official now, they wanted him to be in the pictures this year too. He & the boys met us there.I will post them on the blog next week.

After taking our pictures we headed over to Itz to have some food and fun. The best part was there was no Spring Break crowd so getting there in the early afternoon allowed us to have our run of the place. No waiting on the rides or the games or anything. We got the best seats in the movie theater for our meals. The manager noticed our colored shirts when we arrived & inquired about our group. She was nice enough to give us a group discount we DID NOT technically qualify for because we didn't have the correct number of people. We were definitely #winning!

Riding High !
The Disco

Shoot em up !

Things that go bump
Trying to focus for the win

We rode bumper cars, played games, rode the rides & ate until our heart's content. We spent so many hours there we had lunch AND dinner ! LMAO Mr. Mixologist foolishly let my nieces talk him in to getting on the indoor roller-coaster  with them LOL ! I have actually ridden it with them before & didn't fall for it this time. He admitted that he didn't think it would be that bad because they are 9 & 11.... boy was he unprepared. After he recuperated from the wild ride, I managed to spank him in some basketball. We played best of 3 games & he did NOT get to redeem himself.  We wore those kids out that day & we definitely got way more than our money's worth.

On Wednesday, we planned a day trip to San Antonio. First stop, was Natural Bridge Caverns a place I hadn't been to before. It was a pretty cool tour. The kids really enjoyed it & thought it was really cool to be inside real caves.

Waiting for our tour to start

It turned out the be quite the workout (which I really need right now LOL) you are walking 185 ft down and back. I took lots of  photos but my camera just didn't capture the beauty of it at all.

Inside the Cavern

After the tour we headed downtown to the Riverwalk. I will wrap up the rest of the weeks activities in Part Two.

How was your Spring Break ?  Do you do anything fun ?

Missing

It's weird how things stick with you. Have you ever heard the names Charlotte Kinsey and Cinda Pallet ? Maybe not. They stand out in my mind because those are the names of two 13 yr old girls that vanished back in 1981 from the State Fairgrounds. I was 12 at the time. It was a really big deal. I don't really remember anything about child abductions prior to that point. But it changed my life. It was all over the news for what seemed like forever. We were all concerned and scared. I still remember their names from all of the media coverage at the time. I actually still remember their faces too (I know weird). They never found those girls to this day.

Honestly growing up in the Midwest, in a relatively safe community, we got dropped off at the movies,  dropped off at the Arcade, dropped off at the Mall & even dropped off at the State Fair with no concern what so ever. Nothing really bad ever happened in our community until this. It didn't matter to me at the time that those girls were white & I wasn't.  This was also right around the time that the Atlanta Child Murders started making national news as well. Trust, we never got dropped off at the Fairgrounds or anywhere else again.

As an adult, in this day of 24 hour news coverage, media, blogs, etc. I like everyone else have begun to see how your "appearance" plays into the level of concern and serious effort to find you when you disappear. Laci Peterson, Natalee Holloway, Chandra Levy, Polly Klass  come to mind to name a few. Currently there is a Fac.ebook effort to find a missing woman from Atlanta, Stacey Nicole English, who was last seen the day after Christmas. She is African-American, appears to come from a nice family, appears to be upper middle class and she is young and attractive. But it seems that her complexion may be keeping her case from getting the appropriate news coverage.

I was excited to hear about this new show on TV One, Find Our Missing,  hosted by one of my favorite actresses S. Epatha Merkerson (Law & Order junkie right here ! ) I know the media cannot  report EVERY missing person case, but the obvious double standard gets to me sometimes, especially as a black female.   Here is the preview.

Funny Friday Vol. 1

You may have seen this video already. Things tend to go viral pretty quickly in the FB, Twitter, social networking world. Either way I thought I would share this video here on the blog. It truly brought a smile to my face & tears to my eyes. They might be a little "cheesy" at times, but I still I love precocious little children.

I could totally see my oldest niece Savannah reacting this.exact.same.way. LOL

Enjoy !

LMAO !

She kills me when she stops to deadpan ----"It's my birthday today ?"

I am working from home today & my weekend is going to be low key so I am coasting right on in. I want to try to get outside somewhere & enjoy these fall like temperatures while they last.

Have a wonderful weekend  !

Regroup, Relax, Release, and Recover !

                                                    *  *PHOTO HEAVY POST* *

The kids are back at home now. I have received three tear-filled bedtime phone calls this week because they are missing me :) That fills my heart all the way to the top. I miss them too. Shoot, even Mr. Mixologist is missing them even though we.are.worn.out ! LOL

My and one of my girlfriends, took my crew and her girls and nephews to the Houston Zoo on Wednesday. I really enjoyed it and the kids did too. They have a new African Safari Exhibit that was great. One of the best things about our Zoo is that they allow you to bring in your own coolers with food and drinks. This is great and very cost effective when you have so many kids to feed. We packed a lunch of their preferred food and snacks & had a picnic halfway through our visit. The only downside was there we so many people at the Zoo because it was Spring Break. We heard they set an attendance record of over 30,000 people on one day ! WOW

KJ & Jeff  fixated on the Leopard

I love to watch children's fascination with animals and how they process learning new things. You can see the little wheels turning in their heads.

Savannah & Jeff jamming on the African Drums !

I love musically inclined, creative types and encourage it whenever possible. Trust me when I say, when our kids got on these six drums they had set up in the African Safari area, they drew a crowd. I thought I was going to start picking up money off the ground ! LOL

The Zoo Crew !

Next stop on Thursday was Schlitterbahn Water Park. The kids love it ! I have to admit, I do too. Even though they only have about 1/2 of the rides open during Spring Break, it is still a nice reprieve and my water babies get a chance to have some great fun. This park also allows you to bring in Coolers with your own food and drinks #winning.  Which keeps us from the highway robbery that is the food prices at this joint. We always get there early, find a good camp spot and spend the whole day. Mr. Mixologist came with us on this day trip and was truly a great help. When you have so many kids around water, with varying swimming abilities, it is very necessary. One of my girlfriends neighbors came along with her two daughters, so we had 4 adults, supervising 11 children between the ages of 4 and 16. We always have a strategy. One adult always stayed with our stuff, we then broke the kids into 3 age groups & each adult went with their group to ride the various attractions and we would check back at the camp spot every hour.  The kids slept like dead people after this outing ! #winning LOL

View of Galveston Bay

The kids were squealing with delight by the time we go to Galveston & they actually could see the water.

KJ is salivating thinking about the water

Kid's hate having to wait for their food to digest so they can swim to avoid cramps, but yet they want to eat snacks all day ! I know this is an old wives tale, but I still make them sit for 30 minutes after eating before getting back in. I have no idea if its true, but it's how I was raised. LOL

Bikini Ready

Cool Boys !

By Friday, I was truly spent but I still had to get ready for the annual Party that I throw every year during Spring Break, so that some of my friends & their kids can hang out with my nieces and nephews. Mr. Mixologist came up with the idea of a Fish Fry and agreed to do the cooking in the back yard. He made the Catfish, Shrimp and Hushpuppies. I hooked up some Dirty Rice, Macaroni & Cheese, Caesar Salad and my famous Sopapilla Cheesecake (got the recipe from my Mom who never fails ! ). Everything came together nicely & me and my beau are an awesome team. #winning.  Saturday was a very long, late night, but definitely a great time and all worth it. I spent the early morning hours on Sunday, washing & packing suitcases & when we got back home on Sunday night, I was in.a.coma.for.3.days ! LOL Hence the late wrap-up post !

Below is the last groups of pics, I promise LOL !

Needless to say, me and the beau are cold chillin' this weekend. We plan to regroup, relax, release and recover. His brother from Chicago is coming in next weekend so we are planning some adult activities, and we should be fully rested by then,  but until then, I will be chilling !

March Madness !

It's Wednesday, so we are halfway through the Spring Break visit and I am beat. Since my mind has forgotten, my body is starting to remind me of my age ! LOL. The mini-van turned out to be the best idea. As far as comfort on a long road trip, you can't beat it. With two DVD screens, all the bells and whistles, including awesome storage and room the move around, the kids were definitely more than comfortable. One of my cousin's daughters couldn't come because she didn't want to miss her baby sisters birthday party this coming Saturday, but my other cousin's son, who is 5 quickly volunteered to come in her place so now my nephew who is 4 has somebody to play with.

Savannah picked out the flowers with me
Brunch turned out really great. The food was wonderful of course, but the quality time with my extended family was the best part. I might have decided to have a Mimosa or should I say a few, but whose counting ? LOL Here are some pics from the table I put together at my parents. My oldest niece picked out the flowers.

This 4 yr old is serious about his game !

I had planned to take the little ones to the Houston Rodeo Carnival on Monday, but the rain, nixed that idea so were were indoors the first day. They really enjoyed bowling  & we will definitely do that again. Whoever came up with the idea of those bumpers on the aisles for the less skilled, is a genius, we even had a couple of strikes !

The chair massage was her favorite part.

Later I took the girls to the nail shop, while Mr. Mixologist hung out with the boys. Tuesday, we took our annual Spring Break Photo & let me tell getting 6 kids, picture ready and keeping them that way is no simple feat ! We were happy with how they turned out. I will post some later.

Reminder: You can shop twice as fast when you leave kids at home
For dinner last night, I let them get some ingredients to make their own pizzas and they had flour from their ears to their toes, LOL but  they came out pretty decent.
Cheffin' it up !
We used Turkey Pepperoni and Turkey Italian Sausage, but it was still a little salty to my taste, but they of course thought it was delicious because they had made it.

I cannot tell a lie, my back is killing me right now ! LOL I think its the constant, bending & picking up stuff as well as lifting some of the younger ones, the constant movement that sadly, my body is just not used to anymore ![ Reminder: Increase treadmill time.]   I have been washing more clothes and dishes in these few days than I probably washed last month. Seriously though, the hugs, smiles and the love of these kids is so worth it. This is my cousin's 5 years olds first trip this far from home alone, without his parents & he is doing great and having fun and that is what is important to me.

The hugs are totally worth it :)

Cooking with the Kids

This past Saturday night, I had babysitting duty for my best friend's daughters. Jordan is twelve and Maya is eight. Earlier in the day I got a call from Jordan from her cell phone asking if we could make something in the kitchen, when they came over. She is very much into cooking, and hostess duties. She loves reading recipes and trying new things. In fact, I knew when I saw her name come up on my phone, what she was calling to ask me. My friend, their mother is not much of a cook by her own admission, which is why she sends them to my house all the time for this sort of thing. LOL

Jordan showcasing her cooking skills !

Since they came over after dinner, I decided that we would make a dessert. I had a busy Saturday & did not want to make anything too complicated but wanted to try something new. I found the perfect recipe over at  THREE FOOD WORDS  my new favorite go to site for goodness ! LOL  We decided to make Croissant Apple Turnovers. We decided to double the recipe so they would have something to eat after church Sunday. The girls loved the recipe ! I did the peeling, coring and dicing of the apples, but they pretty much did the rest with my direction and it was a  breeze. They loved the hand's on aspect of peeling apart the dough and crimping the ends of the turnovers. It was quick, easy and very very tasty.

They were focused ! LOL

We put cinnamon on them before baking them, and then when they came out of the oven, they sprinkled them with powdered sugar. We enjoyed our turnovers with some Vanilla Bean Ice Cream and man they were yummy !

The final product
I could tell the girls were really impressed with themselves, especially after they tasted it. The youngest one, Maya who is eight, kept saying,  "Can you send these pictures to my mommy's Facebook ! LOL  Man,  I love cooking, teaching and sharing with kids. It's what my mom did with me, and I enjoy it so much.

Did you cook anything this weekend ?  Have you tried any new recipes lately ?

Thankful: Day 22 Children in my Life

This picture was taken this past summer when my nieces and nephew visited for a couple of weeks. Man we had a blast at the downtown Aquarium ! I love spending time with kids and seeing the world again through their eyes. They remind me of what's important in life and their innocence is intoxicating.

In just a few hours, we will be on our way to spend time with my family for Thanksgiving. I am most looking forward to seeing my nieces, nephew and all my little cousins and spending time, playing games with them, cooking with them and just marveling at how fast they are growing and maturing into little people. Since I live far away I miss out on so much of their development that I look forward to catching up with them at every opportunity.

I love children and I love the fact that I have so many in my life that I love and who love me back.
So today I am thankful for the children present in my life and for all the hugs I will be receiving in just a few hours !

What are you thankful for ?

Reflections on Family

I have had a fun filled two weeks with my nieces and nephews,  but I can honestly say they have worn me out ! LOL I try to make their trips to Houston full of activities and to be honest sometimes I may overdo it, but I just feel like I am missing out on so much of their development since we don't live close, so I really concentrate on "making memories" and they seem to enjoy it. This is the same crew that comes for Spring Break each year. I only have one sister (my biological father does have other kids but I didn't grow up with them and don't know them very well). We grew up close with our cousins, because our mothers were extremely close. My sister has 3 kids and two of my cousins send their daughters too, so I end up having six kids ranging in ages of 3 to 16. Now I can say the oldest one, my cousins daughter is a great help, without her assistance with washing and combing heads,  fixing plates, I don't know if I could make it some days. My sister's oldest Savannah who is almost 10 is also a huge help especially with her 3yr old brother, plus she is a bit of a busy body, and wants to be involved in everything, which sometimes works in my favor when I need her ! LOL

My family arrived the day after my birthday to bring the kids to Houston, and  all the parents stayed over the weekend before heading back home. It was so funny, my cousins 5 yr old Alexandra, must have thought her parents were just going to drop her off and keep it moving cause we were having breakfast on Saturday and she looked at her dad and said "so when are y'all leaving ?"  LMAO we cracked up, and her dad said, "why do you ask ?" and she said, " I was just wondering cause I'm on vacation !" LOL We were dying laughing !

For the most part, I let them get away with a lot, staying up late, sleeping in, snacking just being kids, but they are at the age where all of their personalities are becoming so developed and there are some conflicts that arise, some arguing, etc. which I know is just natural kids stuff. It's funny to listen to them when they think no one is paying attention. Listening to how they resolve conflict, how they brag, even tell tall tales trying to impress one another, and even how they try to manipulate me like I don't see them coming a mile away ! LOL

It rained quite a bit over these past weeks, so a lot of the outdoor activities I planned got rained out, like Kemah Boardwalk (ooh their feelings were hurt !), but we did get to go the Aquarium Downtown and Itz for Olivia's 8th Birthday as well as roller skating and painting and a couple of movies. We had to move it indoors for the most part but still managed to have some fun.

Now I know I have said this before, but it bears repeating. Every time these children come here, turn my life upside down and then leave me to myself, I have a renewed respect for the daily time, attention, work,  and commitment to nurturing that full time mother's put in day after day. I mean mad respect. As a single person who lives alone with only me to be responsible for on a daily basis, I can easily see what an full-time... or I should say overtime job motherhood is in a very real way. Not to mention the emotional aspect of being a constant encourager, answering the craziest questions, having to discipline, etc. Then, getting those kids dressed for church on Sunday after cooking breakfast and combing hair was enough to have me spent and as soon as service was over, it was time to feed them yet again. ! Ooh wee.

One of the things that definitely adds to my work load is the swimming. I am definitely a water baby. Me and my sister both have been swimming since were were 7 & 8. I love the fact that these kids love the water and are not afraid of it at all just like us. The younger ones see that the older ones can swim and want to keep up with them so they are doing their best to learn too. The only thing is all these kids have lots of hair, and you have to take great care to insure that the chlorine gets out.  So some days when I just did not have it in me to do the full on  hair production yet again, I had to say no, but most days I would just suck it up, because I can vividly remember and still know of the joy that swimming brings ! We have a community pool in my Subdivision a few blocks away, but last summer, the crew managed to charm my neighbor across the street who has a huge two story house with a pool and jacuzzi in the back. She invited them last year to come over any time and again this year when she saw they had arrived, gave us the same open invitation, which we accepted several times these past two weeks.  Since we are traveling tomorrow, while we were out today, I let them  get her a gift card and a thank you card. They were so excited to get back home, write their own personal messages in the card and run it over to her house ! LOL

So tomorrow is the final day. I have been washing and packing all evening, getting the snacks for the road trip ready, and preparing myself for the long ride. Although, I will have help with that. Mr. Mixologist will be driving us back tomorrow. He has been a big help as well, even took them to Imaginations to paint while I went to the Salon to get my hair done and a pedicure ! Huge points. He grilled for us last week and also treated us to a movie and these kids are working their way into his heart ! LOL.  When he wasn't around they were asking about him.... his status.... his ETA ! LOL .  Mr. Mixologist  did make my birthday special, he cooked dinner for me, gave a beautiful card, and did not disappoint when he presented me with great seats to this Concert. When my family got here two weeks ago, we had a little belated happy hour for my birthday here at the house, and he worked really hard, serving up his famous libations to which they were much appreciative. So all in all my birthday was great !

**ahem**

Yes, Mr. Mixologist is going home to meet the family :) I am a little excited, yet nervous. Don't really know why, but feel silly that it matters so much. Hope it goes well.... I know that it's going to be OK,  but I am still anxious. I guess since it has been along time since any body mattered this much, I just want it to go well... on both ends. I don't want to put too much pressure on the situation but truthfully, when you live far away, usually you only bring  significant people around your folks. Maybe in some small way, I am worried that taking this step too soon might jinx it & then as soon as I say it, that sounds silly LOL, but I am being honest. My parents & aunts, uncle and other cousins are anxious to meet him and I guess just curious, and very excited that things are working well for us, so they want to get a look at him! LOL My cousins gave good reports from two weeks ago. Best believe I heard about that. So anyway wish me luck. I am sure that I am anxious for nothing.

The Real Deal- Belgium Waffles

This morning I took a train ride to Brussels and went to the city of Belgium. I thought that it was a lovely city and immediately noticed how neat and clean it appears despite the fact the the buildings are obviously historic and have been around for a long time(since the 10th Century). It was lovely weather today with sun and a slight breeze. We did some shopping and I bought the cutest silk tank top. It's green with other colors mixed into the pattern and will be a lovely addition to my Spring wardrobe. I did lots of walking (miles and miles) which at the end of the day, made me feel much better and less guilty about all of the chocolate and waffles that I consumed. When I think of waffles I think of a sit down experience with plenty of syrup and butter on a plate. However, in Belgium they are served to you wrapped in waxed paper hot off the waffle iron to hold in your hand. You can get them drizzled in jam, caramel, chocolate, white chocolate, with powdered sugar, or strawberries and cream. My personal favorite was sprinkled with cinnamon. They are just right amount of soft, yet chewey, warm and oh so delicious !!!. I think I found my new foodcrack obsession ! The other interesting sights is a tourist draw called the Man.neken Pis which in Dutch means " little man urinating". I actually remember seeing this statute in some past history class I am sure. I was surprised about how small the statue actually is. It is a small bronze fountain sculpture depicting a little naked boy urinating into the fountain. There are several different legends as to the origins of the sculpture which is I guess why it draws so many spectators. There was actually a small 10 person parade including a band that walked the block when we were there. It was a nice day trip to Brussels and we returned at the end of the day again by train. We arrived at the central station in The Hague (Den Haag) and then had to walk approximately a mile to get to the house. I continued to marvel at how quiet, peaceful, laid back and relaxed this place seems to be. As we were approximately 3 blocks away, I noticed a little girl coming in our direction. She looked 3 yrs old, no more than 4 for sure. We approached on the path and she smiled and made eye contact. I was looking for a parent or somebody accompanying her and saw no one. I looked to the corner where she came from and then as she passed, I looked back to where she was headed and again saw no one waiting for her or watching for her. She was all by herself ! I was remarking to my cousin how unbelievable it was to me that children can just walk around on the street freely and safely with no concern of their parents. It was truly an odd sight as I am just not used to seeing small children just aimlessly walking about the neighborhood. The just explained how low crime is here, especially assaults and personal attacks and say the only thing that seems to ever happen here is an occasional bike theft. Wow what a peaceful existence ! I could get used to this.
