Saturday Matinee - Internet Series

If you find yourself spending a lazy day at home in need of some quality entertainment, the internet is full of quality shows or "webisodes" as they are called. Of course by now many people know about Issa Ray the Awkward Black Girl. I am so totally excited about her success.  Now it seems that her success has spawned awareness of a lot of young people who are also taking control of their own creativity and using the internet and social media to create and increase the audience for their work. I love discovering a  new series that I can watch at my leisure and convenience. Some of them have room to improve and have gotten much better along the way, but most of them are pretty good considering the obvious minimal budget and the fact that a lot of the actors are relatively inexperienced. The content is fresh, interesting, realistic and entertaining. There is also a lot of great new music used in some of the theme songs too. The "BlackandSexy" Channel on You Tub.e is a great place to discover lots of new shows.

Here are the links to some of the shows that I enjoy. I hope you find them entertaining.

"Roomieloverfriends" - This is a hilarious take on how confusing men and women can be when dealing with each other. You definitely need to start from the beginning on this one to know what is going on.

"The Number" - Issa made an appearance in Season One & I am glad to see the new episode that posted just this week. You might want to watch the all of the first seasons episode to get up to speed.

"the Unwritten Rules" - this is a funny take on being a minority in the workplace. The young actress has gotten a lot better as the episodes have progressed, but the subject matter is funny & so true. This is the link of one of my favorite episodes. It is slightly corny but there is some truth in it.

"The Couple"- This is really like following some people around that you actually know. The dynamics are so realistic to me. I would not be surprised if these actors were really together. They seem so comfortable and familiar with one another.  Evidently they had a campaign to raise money and they are going to film a movie now based on the series.

What internet shows do you watch ?

Day 23 Favorite Movies & TV Show

This is hard. I watch a lot of movies a lot of different genres. I like action, suspense, comedies and drama.  The most recent movie I saw was "Thin.k Like a Man" which I thought was hilarious. I am not a Ste.ve Harvey fan but since the movie was loosely based on his book and had strong actors, I was interested. We took all of the mothers and Aunts on Mother's Day Weekend and they absolutely loved it. It was a great female bonding excursion. They loved Kevin Hart.

As far as TV, this is a little easier. I love ANY type of investigative show/crime drama. I am an original Law & Order fanatic and have seen every episode of that show and all of the spin offs of it (Criminal Intent, SVU, LA etc). Some Saturdays I can catch a marathon and watch several episodes that I have seen already & still enjoy it.  I love puzzles and figuring things out, and putting things together ( just the investigator in me I guess, LOL). Some of my other favorites are Southland, The Closer, Person of Interest, Blue Bloods and Criminal Minds. This genre is pretty popular hence the fact that there is always a new one popping up.

Missing

It's weird how things stick with you. Have you ever heard the names Charlotte Kinsey and Cinda Pallet ? Maybe not. They stand out in my mind because those are the names of two 13 yr old girls that vanished back in 1981 from the State Fairgrounds. I was 12 at the time. It was a really big deal. I don't really remember anything about child abductions prior to that point. But it changed my life. It was all over the news for what seemed like forever. We were all concerned and scared. I still remember their names from all of the media coverage at the time. I actually still remember their faces too (I know weird). They never found those girls to this day.

Honestly growing up in the Midwest, in a relatively safe community, we got dropped off at the movies,  dropped off at the Arcade, dropped off at the Mall & even dropped off at the State Fair with no concern what so ever. Nothing really bad ever happened in our community until this. It didn't matter to me at the time that those girls were white & I wasn't.  This was also right around the time that the Atlanta Child Murders started making national news as well. Trust, we never got dropped off at the Fairgrounds or anywhere else again.

As an adult, in this day of 24 hour news coverage, media, blogs, etc. I like everyone else have begun to see how your "appearance" plays into the level of concern and serious effort to find you when you disappear. Laci Peterson, Natalee Holloway, Chandra Levy, Polly Klass  come to mind to name a few. Currently there is a Fac.ebook effort to find a missing woman from Atlanta, Stacey Nicole English, who was last seen the day after Christmas. She is African-American, appears to come from a nice family, appears to be upper middle class and she is young and attractive. But it seems that her complexion may be keeping her case from getting the appropriate news coverage.

I was excited to hear about this new show on TV One, Find Our Missing,  hosted by one of my favorite actresses S. Epatha Merkerson (Law & Order junkie right here ! ) I know the media cannot  report EVERY missing person case, but the obvious double standard gets to me sometimes, especially as a black female.   Here is the preview.
